RECORDED ON Tue.22.Feb.2011 GMT

If your child is top of the class when it comes to addition, subtraction and all things mathematical, then they could be what Britain needs to help it to World Maths Championship glory.

World Maths Day is on the 1st March and will see millions of children from around the world competing against each other for the honour of topping the leader board after a day of live interactive games of mental arithmetic.

World Maths Day is the world’s largest education event where students (aged 4-18) compete against each other for the honour of topping the leader board after a day of live interactive games of mental arithmetic the World Maths Day website..

Last year, 1,133,246 students from 235 countries correctly answered 479,732,613 questions during the event, with Britain’s best competitor, Sharan Maiya scoring 32,451 points, and with 14 year old Kaya Genc from Australia crowned overall winner. But could this be Britain’s year?

But you don’t have to be a maths-whizz to enter, as World Maths Day is designed for students of all ages and levels of ability. Teachers, parents, government and media are also invited to participate again this year and test their maths skills against the kids.

Besides the prestige of topping the leader board, this year for the first time, through an international partnership with UNICEF, the competition will be used to raise money for UNICEF education programmes in Mozambique and Vietnam.

Listen to our podcast with Jayne Warburton from World Maths Day and Claire Jones from Slough Grammer School to explain how the day will work and how you can make sure your children are in the running.
