Airbus reveals future of formation flight in 'Smarter Skies'

Intelligent planes that are propelled into the air, flock in formation and fly ‘express skyways’ could cut time, delays, stress and emissions, according to Airbus experts.
Those behind the wheel during rush hour aren’t the only ones stuck in traffic. Airbus says air passengers already spend more than 500 million hours in the air unnecessarily every year. Reasons include inefficient aircraft operations and routes that are anything but ‘direct’. That equates to nine million tonnes of avoidable excess fuel and more than 28 million tonnes of CO2. The numbers are set to rise with passenger growth expected to grow.
Airbus, which says the technology already exists to fly shorter and more precise routes, today unveils five revolutionary concepts to get passengers from A to B quicker, whilst helping the industry meet its target to halve CO2 emissions by 2050. It’s the latest installment in the Future by Airbus – a vision of sustainable aviation in 2050 already responsible for the radical Concept Plane and Cabin. Now Airbus is looking beyond aircraft design to how the aircraft is operated both on the ground and in the air. Its ‘Smarter Skies’ concepts are:

Aircraft launched into continuous ‘eco-climb’ – Assisted take-off using renewably powered, propelled acceleration, would see aircraft climb rapidly to their most efficient cruising altitude, reducing emissions and noise. As mega-cities become a reality and space becomes a premium, runways could be shortened to minimise land use.
Aircraft in ‘free flight’ and formation along ‘express skyways’ – Intelligent aircraft would be able to self-organise and select the most efficient routes (‘free flight’), making the optimum use of prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions. Planes could rendezvous in mid-air and flock like birds in formation to reduce drag and thus fuel consumption and emissions
‘Low-noise’ glided approaches and landings – In descent, aircraft could glide smoothly into airports with engines running in idle, significantly reducing emissions and noise. Slower landing speeds would make shorter runways a viable possibility at both ends of the journey
Low emission ground operations – Landing positions could be optimised with enough accuracy for autonomous, renewably powered taxiing carriages to be ready, clearing runways quicker and optimising terminal space to remove runway and gate limitations. Engines could be switched off sooner, further reducing on-the-ground handling emissions
Powering future aircraft and infrastructure – The use of sustainable biofuels and other potential alternative energy sources such as electricity, hydrogen and solar, will secure supply and further reduce aviation’s environmental footprint. This will allow the extensive introduction of regionally sourced renewable energy close to airports, feeding both aircraft and infrastructure requirements.

Air travel to remain real World Wide Web

In the approach to Farnborough International Air show (UK), leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus reveals what passengers want from the future of flight: more sustainable; less stressful; and more of it, despite social media revolutionising how we keep in touch.

63% of people worldwide say they will fly more by 2050
60% do not think social media will replace the need to see people face-to-face
But 96% believe aircraft will need to be more sustainable or ‘eco-efficient’
And almost 40% feel air travel (the door-to-door ‘passenger experience’) is increasingly stressful

Airbus has engaged with more than 1.75 million people worldwide in a two-year consultation that is already shaping what – and how – we will fly in the future.
Airbus is using the feedback to develop its vision of sustainable aviation in 2050 and today unveils new footage of that vision. It is the latest step in the ‘Future by Airbus’ programme which has already given rise to the revolutionary Airbus Concept Plane and radical 100% recyclable Airbus Concept Cabin.
Both gave a glimpse into innovations to meet evolving passenger trends and environmental demands. They include technologies to reduce fuel burn, emissions and noise, with a light-weight ‘intelligent’ body, transparent wall membranes and morphing seats that harvest body heat for power.
But as more people fly more often, the greater their expectations for the ‘end-to-end passenger experience’ will be. The Airbus consultation highlights a somewhat predictable list of gripes: queues at passport control; slow check-in and baggage collection; sitting on the tarmac; and circling overhead.
Such issues have come to the fore in London this summer and, with aviation set to double in the next 15 years, could become more common unless the industry can work together to cut delays.

World's first 'Total' Coastal Path set to open in Wales

Wales appears to be making quite a mark on the World tourism stage. In 2010 the Ryder Cup graced its green and pleasant land, then last year Pembrokeshire was voted the second best coastal destination in the world – now in May this year, the first ever ‘total’ coastal path will be completed, and Wales will, as a result, become the first country in the world to offer tourists a formal trail right around its coast.
Developments are currently being made to the biggest single section, the 40 mile (64km) Gower Coast Path, giving the public easy access to Wales’ best kept countryside secrets. But whilst we wait for the final finishing touches, watch our video for a sneak preview of this incredible trail before it opens to the public. The video also showcases an initiative being supported by Ordnance Survey named the ‘GeoVation Challenge’ which this year, is asking us all how we can connect communities and visitors along the Wales Coast Path through the application of geographic data, skills and expertise.
The 870 mile (1,400km) all-Wales coast path stretches from the Dee estuary in north east Wales, west to Anglesey and Gwynedd, and down the west and south west Wales coast going east to Cardiff and Newport with views over the Bristol Channel.

Cruelty in a Concrete Jungle

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is calling on London’s mayoral candidates to pledge to properly resource London’s specialist wildlife cops.
The international animal welfare charity, which last month revealed it was sponsoring the Met’s specialist Wildlife Crime Unit through a £100,000 donation, fears that wildlife crime will flourish in the capital unless a long-term commitment is made to tackle the problem.
The WSPA’s donation has provided some much needed breathing space for the Wildlife Crime Unit, but it only last until October 2012. So today the WSPA is launching ‘Cruelty in a Concrete Jungle’ its campaign to get the mayoral candidates to step up to safeguard the future of the unit.
Nic Dakin MP is hosting a Parliamentary Reception where guests will have the opportunity to view a rare display of wildlife items seized in London.
Wildlife crime is not a niche, illicit trade carried out by petty part-time villains. It’s a major source of revenue for a global network of hardened criminals – gangs, drug lords, terrorists all growing rich from the trafficking of wildlife.
London is a major hub for the illegal wildlife trade. The Metropolitan Police has seized over 30,000 endangered species items since 1995. In 2008 they seized thousands of pounds worth of raw ivory products, some manufactured in the UK, which included 24 whole elephant tusks. And last year, the unit oversaw the world’s largest seizure of rhino horn (including 129 individual horns) in Kensington.
WSPA are urging the mayoral candidates not to turn a blind eye to wildlife crime. As long as the enforcement of their illegal activities is under-resourced and under-prioritised, there will be wildlife at risk of exploitation, cruelty and even extinction.

As long as the enforcement of their illegal activities is under-resourced and under-prioritised, there will be wildlife at risk of exploitation, cruelty and even extinction.</itunes:summary>

First mass-produced electric cars take to the streets of Africa

For the first time ever, a fleet of mass-produced, zero-emission vehicles have taken to the streets of Africa.
A dozen electric cars from the Renault-Nissan Alliance highlighted the benefits of green transportation and provided a zero-emission shuttle services for delegates at the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, Nov. 28-Dec. 9. The 17th annual Conference of Parties (better known as COP17) aims to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.”
The highly acclaimed Nissan LEAF and the Renault Fluence ZE, two of the most affordable zero-emission cars ever produced, were on the streets as shuttles for COP17 delegates. They are also available for test drives.
The Alliance also offers one of the first public test drives in the Renault Twizy, a fun-to-drive commuter vehicle that can be plugged into many conventional wall sockets.
Electric vehicles, which can be charged from purely renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, will play a critical role in achieving COP17’s goals and reducing the impact of climate change.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance is the world leader in electric-vehicle technology and the only car group worldwide offering a range of vehicles that consume no gasoline whatsoever. The Renault-Nissan Alliance plans to sell 1.5 million zero-emission cars by 2016.
Nissan has already sold more than 20,000 LEAFs on three continents, making it the most popular EV in the world. Renault has just begun selling the Kangoo ZE minivan. The Fluence ZE family sedan will go on sale shortly followed by the Twizy urban 2-seater, and the ZOE compact hatchback next year.
South Africa aims to become the continent’s leader in clean-energy generation. The country hopes to build one of the world’s biggest solar power plants – an ambitious effort that would increase access to electricity while simultaneously reducing the region’s dependence on fossil fuels. Giant mirrors and solar panels would dot the Northern Cape province, which ranks in the sunniest 3 percent of regions worldwide.
“Like many nations, South Africa understands the imperative of a clean energy grid and how zero-emission cars fit into a greener energy ecosystem,” said Hideaki Watanabe, Corporate Vice President of the Zero Emission Business Unit at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Renault-Nissan Alliance Managing Director, Zero Emission Business. “The Renault-Nissan Alliance applauds what South Africa and all the nations represented at COP17 are doing to reduce the threat to our environment and standard of living due to global warming.”
Nissan has announced plans to launch Nissan LEAF to South Africa in 2013, subject to the successful conclusion of discussions between the government and the motor industry regarding the introduction of customer incentives and a recharging infrastructure.

Dairy farming's future lies in successes of its past

Families are being asked to do their bit to save the British countryside and protect the future of local farms by asking supermarkets and shops where the milk they sell comes from.
There are now just 15,000 dairy farms left in the UK (11,000 in England and Wales) – down from almost 30,000 ten years ago as farmers struggle to make a profit. Now some are considering investing in huge American style ‘mega dairies’ where cows are primarily kept indoors by their thousand and milked intensively.
However a leading animal charity today has released a report that they say shows the concept of factory-like giant dairy farms is completely flawed. It is endorsed by Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden, who says that the business case for mega-dairies is based on “high risk economic guesswork”.
In their report, Weighing up the Economics of Dairy Farming, WSPA says some current business models are not sustainable in the UK, that farmers should be encouraged to go back to basics by adopting a pasture-based system rather than keeping their herds indoors, and using different varieties of cattle that may produce less milk each day but live longer and healthier lives.
This they believe offers an achievable and smart business model that can work for dairy farmers.
Dragons’ Den investor Deborah Meaden said: “The British dairy industry is in crisis. Ordinary farmers are being railroaded into thinking that bigger is better and they must go intensive to survive. With this report WSPA and I firmly contest that belief. Not only is it wrong for farmers, the countryside, consumers and for cows, but it is based on unsustainable principles and high risk economic guesswork. WSPA is proposing a viable, alternative business model. I hope that it gets the attention it deserves before it’s too late, and this crisis becomes an irreversible calamity.”
And consumers are being urged to do their bit in the debate by asking where their milk comes from. In the same way that the campaign to overcome battery-farmed hens used consumer power, WSPA wants customers to challenge supermarket bosses and shop owners to find out if their milk comes from cows grazed on the land or from those kept primarily indoors.

Electric car launch turns cost of motoring back thirty years

Nissan LEAF six times cheaper to run than equivalent petrol car.
From the 21st March hard-pressed families have the chance to bypass the crippling cost of filling a tank with the launch of the world’s first affordable, mass produced 100% electric car.
The Nissan LEAF, which goes on sale across the UK from the 21st March, promises to turn back the clock thirty years to an era when the cost of fuel was six times cheaper than it is today.
And just 48hrs before George Osborne addresses the issue of fuel duty in his much awaited Budget statement drivers are being offered the chance to embrace the new dawn of electric motoring.
With fuel costs having reached the record £6 per gallon* barrier the all-electric Nissan LEAF costs approx. £2 for a full charge (providing a 110 mile range). An equivalent sized petrol engine car would cost, on average, £12 to travel the same distance.
This is effectively turning back the clock on motoring costs to levels not seen since 1979 when petrol cost just £1 per gallon.
The LEAF which is on sale at £25,990–including a £5,000 Govt incentive is already sold-out for the next six months as motorists eager to save money queue up to get behind the wheel of the revolutionary car.
Watch the following video to see the key handover and customers driving the LEAF for the first time at Waltham Abbey Dealers, with Paul Willcox, MD, Nissan Motor GB and Nissan Leaf customers.

Watch the following video to see the key handover and customers driving the LEAF for the first time at Waltham Abbey Dealers, with Paul Willcox, MD, Nissan Motor GB and Nissan Leaf customers.</media:text>

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveil the 102EX

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled the 102EX, a one-off, fully electric powered Phantom at the Geneva Motor Show. The car will tour the world during 2011, serving as a test bed to gather a bank of research data which will be crucial in informing future decisions on alternative drive-trains for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
“We have engineered the world’s first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment,” said CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, speaking from the company’s headquarters in Goodwood. “With this vehicle, we begin an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce motor cars of the future.”
With 102EX, also known as the Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), it is the company’s intention to carefully test the opinions and reactions to alternative drive-train options of a range of stakeholders including owners, enthusiasts, members of the public and the media.
102EX will serve as a working test bed for a global tour that takes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Through test drives, owners will be given the opportunity to experience an alternative drive-train technology and to feedback their experiences, thoughts and concerns directly to Rolls-Royce.
While there are no plans to develop a production version, as one of the company’s EX models it will serve to begin a dialogue with existing owners and stakeholders, posing as well as answering questions of its audience.
These include the car’s ability to deliver an acceptable range between re-charges and to operate in extreme weather conditions. But also to benchmark reliability and quality against customer expectations of the world’s pinnacle automotive brand.
“I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience,” added Müller-Ötvös. “It must be a technology that is right for our customers, our brand and which sets us on a sound footing for a sustainable future.”
In preparation for the Geneva debut, Rolls-Royce will launch the website www.electricluxury.com this week, a portal to fuel a wider global debate seeking views on the question of electric luxury from media, VIPs and stakeholders. The site will also deliver regular updates of the car’s progress while on tour.

Not another bovine love song...

If you’re trying to impress someone special today by emailing them a music video of a love song of epic proportions, then I Will Always Love You, or My Heart Will Go On simply won’t do.
This Valentine’s Day, the music video set to win over even the hardest of hearts is a song about the love story between a farmer and his cow!
“Our Love Is In Your cornflakes” – the music video ballad released by the World Society for the Protection of Animals – must surely be the biggest animal love song since Kermit the Frog sang Rainbow Connection to Miss Piggy in 1979.
The song is part of WSPA’s Not In My Cuppa campaign to stop plans for the UK's first mega dairy which will see thousands of cows housed in concrete sheds and could result in serious environmental consequences and put hundreds of farmers at risk of going out of business. The issue will come to a head on March 8th when the planning application for the indoor farm at Nocton in Lincolnshire is decided.
Be one of the first people in the world to watch the music video set to become the smash hit of Valentine’s Day 2011 and support the Not In My Cuppa campaign.

How many Olympic Cyclists does it take to power your home?

You might be able to work out how much energy your home uses on an average day just by looking at your power bill, but if watts and kilowatts mean nothing to you then it’s hard to really put your energy usage into perspective.
In an effort to show people which appliances use the most energy, Baxi Ecogen have teamed up with Olympic and World Champion Cyclist Nicole Cooke to show how much pedal power it takes to fire up a lightbulb, a kettle, a microwave and lots of other everyday household items.
Watch the following video feature to see how much time on the bike it takes Olympic cycling gold medalist Nicole Cooke to make enough energy to fuel your home.

Green cars – a practical option?

Do you consider yourself to be an environmentally conscious driver? How about when it comes to buying your next car?
Well if you feel your green credentials slipping with the second question then you are not alone.
New research has shown that although 85% of motorists would like to do their bit for the environment when buying a new car, just 6% cite that the cars’ green credentials is the key decision maker when it comes to the crunch.
But with the deadline looming for the UK to meet challenging carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol, and 35 million vehicles on Britain’s roads accounting for a fifth of the country’s total CO2 emissions, now is the time to take action.
The EU has set a target for the UK to have cars emitting below 130 grammes of CO2 per kilometre by 2015, and car manufacturers are really starting to play their part.
So what is the car industry doing to help you go green and what can you do as a driver to make sure we meet the protocol?
In the following video Nikki Rooke from the SMMT, Peter Fouquet, President of Bosch UK and John Kingston from Honda discuss how the companies are investing to help us reach our 2015 target along with what additional benefits you will reap from greener cars.
